Introduction

Jain Irrigation has been working for agriculture for past over four and half decades. The founder, Padmashree Dr. B.H.Jain, as a son of the soil. His work since 1963 reflects his belief that agriculture is the backbone of Indian economy, and that technology will be key to build sustainability, self-reliance and growth.

At its facilities in Jalgaon, Jain Irrigation manufactures, produces quality agri-inputs, and processes fruits and vegetables. Activities include plastic piping systems, drip and springler irrigation systems, controlled farming - greenhouses, shade houses and tunnels, bio technology inputs—grafts, tissue culture planting materials, hybrid and high-yielding seeds, bio-organic mediums, solar products, and biogas power generation. Jain Irrigation offers a host of high tech agri-services related to water management, land management, crop planning, post harvest and sale, wasteland development and turnkey project consulting and contract management.

Jain Irrigation research and demonstration facilities

JISL cultivates over 3,500 acres of land in its facilities in Jalgaon and Udumalpet. Jain also procures through contracts fruits and vegetables from small and medium farmers with over 5,000 acres, which Jain processes into dried onion and fruit pulp products. . Jain Irrigation provides total solutions in respect of water, soil and crop management, and insight into farm cultivation and operations. Jain Irrigation probably has the largest pool of agricultural scientists, technicians and engineers in the private sector. A core strength of Jain Irrigation is its committed, profession technical team with global experience, domain knowledge, and a strong connection to farmers.
JISL uses its own and leased land, and the farms engaged in fruit and vegetable value chains as demonstration farms for other farmers. Trials initially undertaken on Jain farms are replicated selectively on smaller farms in Jain value chains, providing real time experimentation and strong data bases on productivity improvements. Jain´s own farms are spread over different geo-climatic locations providing results under different conditions.

Jain´s core competency in training

Jain Irrigation offers training and extension services at its Hi-Tech Agri Institute established in 1995 at Jain Hills in Jalgaon. Over 48,000 farmers participate in training programs each year at Jalgaon and its training facility in Tamil Nadu. The Institute also organizes training and field visits for agricultural officers and students, researchers, and farmers from India and around the world as well as conferences and workshps.

Agri produce processing facilities

Jain Irrigation has state-of-the-art integrated dehydration and fruit processing facilities. Selected varieties of onion, vegetables, banana, mango, guava, and papaya are grown by small farmers in Jain value chains; Jain also purchases from the market. Jain has focused primarily on exporting processed fruits and vegetables for export markets.

Jain´s and the banana revolution: tissue culture technology

Jain has a highly modern plant tissue culture laboratory with the capacity to produce 50 million banana plantlets; In addition Jain has one of the biggest green house and shade house facilities which can harden more than 10 million plants in one cycle. The paradigm shift from traditional method of banana cultivation to the recent advanced hi-tech method has been the key factor for the banana revolution, accelerating the time when plants are fully productive and dramatically increasing the yields. In 2011, Jain sold 35 million plantlets up from 50,000 when operations were initiated in 1994. JISL has recently introduced pomegranate plant sales. Banana tissue culture plants are sold to small and medium sized farmers through the Jain dealer network.

Solar energy and bio-gas use

JISL produces solar based products such as hot water systems, photovoltaic products, biogas from agro-processed waste, and recently solar-driven DC pumps to drive the drip irrigation system.

Jain Irrigation has combined cost effective technology applications with Indian common sense in providing responsive solutions to India´s farmers.
